Composites for Renewable Energy Conference
CANCELLED: 28th - 30th June 2006
University of
Plymouth, UK
First Announcement and Call
for Papers
Polymer composite materials
have been widely accepted in many engineering sectors, such as marine,
aerospace and automotive. Their primary attributes are high
strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight, fatigue and corrosion
resistance, but these advantages can only be realised if design and
manufacture can be achieved economically. The rapidly-growing renewable
energy sector should be able to capitalise on progress made in other
sectors, and exploit composites technology as part of an increased
sustainability of energy supply. This conference will examine the current
state of the art in the application of composites to a range of energy
technologies, and explore new developments in materials, structural design
and maintenance. In addition to wind turbine technology, the conference
will be considering other applications of composites, including marine
current turbines, wave power devices and other large structures.
Abstracts (200-300
words) are now invited addressing the following topics:
-
Global markets for
renewable energy and materials supply issues.
-
Fatigue performance of
composite materials and structures.
-
Design procedures, data
and validation for very large composite structures.
-
Long-term environmental
performance.
-
‘Smart’ technologies for
structural health monitoring.
-
Manufacturing techniques
and cost reduction for large structures.
-
Operating experience,
maintenance and repair.
-
Life cycle analysis and
end-of-life disposal issues.
The abstract (200-300 words) should clearly
state the objectives, (anticipated) results and novelty/conclusions of the
work undertaken. Abstracts should be e-mailed to
reconference@plymouth.ac.uk
to arrive by
8th January 2006.
Authors of papers will be
advised of acceptance during early February.
Electronic versions of the
full paper will be required by
30th April 2006.
Papers presented at the conference will be issued as bound conference
preprints to all registered delegates on arrival. After refereeing, papers
may be published in a Composites Part A special edition.
Exhibition and poster
papers
An exhibition of applications, equipment and related services
will take place in the catering/circulation area outside the meeting rooms.
Contact the Short Course Unit for further information. A limited area for
poster papers will be available for delegates who do not wish to make a
verbal presentation or for papers which the organisers consider are not
appropriate for the plenary sessions of the conference.
Indicative fees and
accommodation costs
The fee will cover
refreshments provided throughout the meeting including the conference dinner
and the printed papers. The registration fees for the three-day conference
will be approximately £280. Concessions will be available for students and
members of sponsoring organisations.
Accommodation (B&B) in
single en-suite rooms in the Robbins Centre (five minutes walk from the
conference venue and within easy walking distance of the city centre and the
historic Barbican area) is currently £28/night. Accommodation can be
arranged in the 4-star Copthorne Hotel at a reduced rate. Detailed costings
will be included with the conference programme and registration form.
The conference is budgeted
on a break-even basis and it is thus not possible to contribute towards
delegates’ travel costs or to sponsor places at the meeting.
Venue
Plymouth is an attractive
city situated on Plymouth Sound - one of the largest natural bays on the
South Coast of England. The city has a long history with especial interest
during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I when Drake and other notable sea
captains sailed from the city. It was also a point of departure for the
Mayflower sailing to America with the early settlers.
